Fiat Money Defined

What is Fiat Currency?

Fiat money refers to any currency lacking intrinsic value that is declared legal tender by a government. ... In this respect, unlike currencies backed by gold or silver, fiat money does not have any intrinsic value (e.g., paper money and much coinage). The U.S. dollar is an example of fiat money.

Fiat money has been defined variously as: Any money declared by a government to be legal tender. State-issued money which is neither convertible by law to any other thing, nor fixed in value in terms of any objective standard. Intrinsically valueless money used as money because of government decree.

Gold is real money.
